Transforming Patient Diagnostics in Madrid — A Complete Laboratory Makeover

Infanta Sofía University Hospital

The Anatomical Pathology Service Laboratory at the Infanta Sofía University Hospital in Madrid aims to provide high-quality diagnostics to guide the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Histopathologists took the opportunity of moving to a new building to completely overhaul their histology sample preparation workflow and optimize their laboratory layout, guided by a Leica Biosystems Workflow Specialist certified in the Six Sigma principles.

To keep up with growing demands, the laboratory replaced a collection of outdated and inefficient methods with a full fleet of instruments from Leica Biosystems – including a HistoCore PELORIS 3 tissue processing system, HistoCore SPECTRA Workstation, BOND-III fully automated IHC and ISH staining system, and an Aperio GT 450 digital pathology slide scanner. The new fleet of instruments allows the laboratory to customize protocols according to the type and quantity of samples it receives, ensuring that the service can keep up with a mounting workload and provide high-quality results to pathologists.
